Latest anthology by Liverpool author focuses on the supernatural
LIVERPOOL – From ghosts, monsters and legends to the macabre and fantastical, Where Evil Dwells: The Nova Scotia Anthology of Horror will frighten, intrigue and change the way you think about the supernatural. This is the premise of Liverpool’s Vernon Oickle’s newest book.
Where Evil Dwells is a collection of work produced by a mix of writers. Oickle says he edited the book and also contributed a short story to the book.
“I have always been fascinated by anthologies, even when I was younger,” he says. “There’s just something interesting and mysterious about pulling together different writers to produce a book containing work on the same or topic.”
In this case, Oickle asked the writers to produce a piece of writing – either fiction or non-fiction, short story or essay – on the theme of horror. Other than a word count and the deadline, that was the only criteria he imposed. The result is an eclectic collection featuring some of the best writers in Nova Scotia, such as Steve Vernon, Bruce Nunn, Anna Braun Taylor and Laura Best, who take the reader on a wild ride to the extreme limits and beyond the realm of reality.
On Dec. 16, from 1-3 p.m., Oickle will be having a reading and book signing at the Queens County Museum. He will read from the new book and possibly from one of his earlier books. Oickle guarantees it will be lots of fun.
“I do a lot to signings and presentations across the province but it’s nice to do an event at home, so I appreciate the invitation from the museum,” he says.
Oickle actually has two books coming out in 2018, one in the spring and one in the fall. He is also editing another anthology that will be published next fall, and he says to stay tuned for more details on all of those projects.
Where Evil Dwells is available wherever books are sold or by visiting the publisher’s website, MacIntyre Purcell Publishing Inc. If someone is having difficulty finding the book, Oickle says they can always contact him and he can help people get it.
